/  WHO WE ARE

Since forming in 2005, Phil Coffey Architects have been named winners in the AJ Corus 40 under 40 Award, awarded by the leading industry magazine, The Architects Journal. Our work was exhibited at the V&A Museum, central London and has featured widely in the architectural, local and national press.

Prior to setting up his own practice, Phil Coffey worked with the world renowned practice Ian Ritchie Architects. He worked for seven years on arts projects, helping to design and deliver the Plymouth Theatre Royal production centre and the Spire of Dublin, both shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2003/2004 respectively.

Phil Coffey has been a part time tutor to degree and diploma students at the Welsh School of Architecture since 2005, he has also been an invited critic at the Bartlett School of Architecture, London.

/  OUR APPROACH

Our clients are our primary concern

We have the ability to multi-task our projects ensuring they all move forward on program, within budget and to a high quality.

You will enjoy working with us

We believe in an inclusive process, it takes time to create architecture and we work to provoke you, provide options and inform your decisions. Our hope is that by the end of the process we will know more about you and your passions, and you will know more about us and ours.

Who we work with is important

If required, we can introduce you to our consultants who understand us and allow our architecture to do the talking. We can coordinate your project through concept design, planning and construction, ensuring that the team deliver a quality product that meets with your ambitions and your deadlines.

We bring added value to your project

The right way is not necessarily the most expensive way. Our architecture is buildable. The detail of your project informs the very first sketches we will produce for you. You can be confident of a holistic approach to meet your budget.

As for our architecture...

In summary, we believe you feel architecture before you think it, its whole should be more than the sum of its parts, materials should get better with age and, that in the end, we would all rather be outside...

/  OUR PHILOSOPHY

Ideas are not enough

Each of our schemes is germinated from an initial essence based on our feelings surounding a project. How a building engages with us emotionally is at least as important as how well it performs practically, otherwise all our choices would be based strictly on cost and pragmatism, rather than emotion and appeal. What you feel is more important than what you think, the essence of a project.

Designing depth

We strive for an irreducible complexity in our work. For us, The holistic perception of a piece of architecture is infinitely more important than any one part or attribute. We enjoy design that reveals itself over time. To create this we continually draw, photograph and make models, through this iterative process we discover space, texture and form.

Clear construction and truth to materials

We have experienced many buildings either through design, construction or simply as visitors. We enjoy architecture that is well constructed. Our projects are built from details which create a holistic symbiotic relationship with the wider form of the building. A human approach which appeals to all the senses through materiality.

Our environment matters

Our passion for space is derived from inspirational landscape, fresh air and differing light. A mental and physical connection to the outside through distant views, natural ventilation and daylight drives our work.

Through a balanced mix of feelings, process, construction and passion for landscape, we aim to discover a delightful, complex architecture based on emotion, depth, substance and context.
